The roller coasters at Six Flags Great Adventure

El Toro, with Kingda Ka in the background

The Six Flags Great Adventure theme park has a lot of flaws in the way that the park is run and operated.  This is truly a shame, because they do have many fun and exciting rides.  Hopefully they will get their act together so customers can enjoy their time in the park and on the rides.  Without a smoothly operated park, it won't be worth it even to go on these fun roller coasters.

If you go during an off-time, or you can get past the inadequacies of how the park is run, here are some of the highlights of the rides and roller coasters that they have:

El Toro

This intense wooden roller coaster was built in 2006, and features at 76 degree drop.  It's aptly named, as El Toro means "the bull" in Spanish, and you'll probably feel like you're on a bucking bronco while you're on this coaster.  There is a lot of air time on this ride, meaning that you'll be lifted slightly out of your seat as you go down the big drops (don't worry though, the lap bars are very tight and you'll feel secure).  By far one of the most intense wooden roller coasters in existence.

Nitro

This steel roller coaster will have you drop 215 feet on the first fall, with many more fun falls after that.  It's a smooth ride and a high quality coaster.  The structure and set up is very similar to Steel Force, located at Dorney Park, which starts you off with a 205 foot drop.  In 2009, Nitro was ranked as the third best steel roller coaster in the world by the Golden Ticket Awards.

Kingda Ka

Kingda Ka is currently the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world, and goes up to 128 miles per hour.  If you're a hardcore roller coaster fan willing to try anything, you have to try Kingda Ka.  It goes almost straight up and straight down at the end, reaching a height of 456 feet.

Bizarro

Bizarro was rethemed and renamed in 2009, having previously been the floorless coaster Medusa.  Going along with the comic books theme, Bizarro joins the ranks of Superman, Batman, Nitro, and the Dark Knight in getting his own roller coaster.  The updates to this ride gave it a fun theme and really add a lot to the experience.  Not only is the roller coaster itself fun, you now have a soundtrack playing by your ear with quotes from different movies, and as you pass certain areas flames will shoot up around you or you'll be sprayed with water.  For a fun experience, try riding this one after dark.

Batman: The Ride

This is an inverted steel roller coaster and is one of Six Flags' oldest and most popular, appearing in many of their other theme parks.  In many ways it is a classic inverted roller coaster, with your legs dangling, and while there's not much to say about it and nothing really unique, it's certainly a fun one.

The Dark Knight

This one is an indoor roller coaster which opened in 2008.  They try to make it spooky and really hype it up a lot, but if you've ever been on a wild mouse ride, you know what to expect.  The layout is basically the same as every other wild mouse, but they make it unique by putting it in darkness, with lights and special effects to create a fun and somewhat suspenseful experience.

I haven't been there since the year El Toro opened, but I'm planning a trip this summer. Can't wait. Thanks for the update on the new rides!

Sounds like they have a good variety of rides; too bad that at times the wait is 90 minutes to go on them...

I haven't been to Six Flags in a very long time. Bizarro sounds like fun!
