Tiger Woods hurt in minor car accident (VIDEO, PHOTOS) - CNN is reporting that perhaps the most well-known player today in the game of golf was injured Friday in a minor car accident outside his home in the Isleworth gated community of Windermere, Florida. Windermere is a suburb of Orlando.
Windermere police responded to a 911 call early Friday morning. According to police reports, Mr. Woods hit a fire hydrant and a tree with his 2009 Cadillac Escalade when pulling out of his driveway at 2:25 a.m. Friday. Police say when they arrived they found the world-class athlete lying on the ground semi-unconscious in front of his vehicle with his wife, Elin Nordegren, bent over him administering first aid. He suffered lacerations to his upper and lower lip, and there was blood coming out of his mouth.
Mr. Woods was taken to Health Central Hospital by Orange County fire and rescue where he was subsequently treated and released.
According to the New York Times, the pro golfer was due to speak with the Florida Highway Patrol Saturday afternoon in more detail about the incident, which remains under investigation. When police first arrived and checked out Mr. Woods, they reported the incident did not appear to involve alcohol. Police Chief Daniel Saylor told reporters that they were told the golfer's wife used a golf club to break through the back window of the vehicle to pull her husband out of the car.
The hour of the incident and its unusual circumstances leave unanswered questions. The tape of the 911 call will be released as early as Sunday, according to USA Today. Mr. Woods's website has the following statement regarding the accident:
"From Health Central Hospital and Tiger Woods' office: Tiger Woods was in a minor car accident outside his home last night. He was admitted, treated and released today in good condition. We appreciate very much everyone's thoughts and well wishes."
Tiger Woods is scheduled to host and play the Chevron World Challenge on Monday at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California. He has won the tournament himself four times, but the money raised goes toward the Tiger Woods Foundation programs.
