Oprah ending show after 25th season in 2011 -- CNN is reporting that Harpo Inc. has sent out a letter to its television affiliates Thursday evening announcing the end of The Oprah Winfrey Show.  The last show will be September 9, 2011. Ms. Winfrey is expected to announce the retirement of the program on Friday's show, November 20, 2009. The talk show host, actor, and media executive will be 57 when the show ends.

According to Oprah.com, the program has been the highest rated show of its kind for 23 consecutive years.  It is broadcast in 145 countries around the world to an estimated 42 million viewers a week.

Airing is most markets during the "latch-key" hour of 4:00 p.m., The Oprah Winfrey Show not only educated and entertained adults, primarily women, who were home making dinner at that time, but it also provided information and discussion for adolescent girls. Many shows dealt with topics of importance to teens and women in their 20s such as health, safety, sexuality, jobs, musical artists and other entertainers, spirituality, and dealing with relationships.

It is not yet known what Ms. Winfrey plans to turn her vitality toward after the end of her weekday television talk show.  She has established a school in Africa for girls.  She also has a production company that has been involved in radio and filmmaking.  She has backed such pictures as Precious recently.  Winfrey has a media empire, including a magazine.

Ms. Winfrey may or may not give more details during her show Friday, but the pre-announcement is sure to increase the show's ratings for that day.
