New Mexico soccer - Elizabeth Lambert has been suspended indefinitely from the game, according the the Golobos.com website, the University of New Mexico official athletic website.

Ms. Lambert's rough play against Brigham Young University Thursday, including pulling an opponent to the ground by her hair, resulted in a YouTube sensation on the Internet that brought unpleasant attention to the player, her team, and her school. The incident occurred during the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Championship in Provo, Utah.

ESPN reports that the junior defender has apologized for her actions. "I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation. I take full responsibility for my actions and accept any punishment felt necessary," Ms. Lambert said.

With many young adult girls playing college, high school, and junior high soccer, the incident has left many involved with women's soccer and sports across the country in general wondering why play continued with so many blatant fouls happening during a single game.

Well, she will certainly have to answer for her actions. She pretty much crossed the line. But if you watch closely...her actions were purely retaliatory. She was elbowed in the gut BEFORE she threw a punch. She was being pulled off balance by her uniform shorts by the opposing player BEFORE she grabbed her by her hair. I sure hope that her opponents are not crying FOUL on this one. If you ask me, they know deep down they got what they were asking for. I guess, if you ain't cheatin'...you ain't tryin'. Referees should have controlled that game.

RIck......Do you actually believe that what she did was pure retaliatory? She was out of control and really should have been thrown out of the game before it got any worse. I mean the punch in the back not so bad. But the other punches and the hair pull and even the kicking the ball in her opponents face, thats not cool and should result in a hefty punishment.

It is unconceivable that the referees did not take action in the first instance. There are usually three referees in a game and their job is to control this kind of behavior. I believe there should be some type of sanction on referees that let a game get to this point. As to Elizabeth Lambert she should be banned from contact sport for life and be place on some type of anger management program.
