While an entrepreneur is defined as “a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk,” an entrepreneur no longer refers solely to someone opening a business. We are all social entrepreneurs as we navigate the safeties and controls of our everyday life.

To that end, it is best to consult an expert on the topic. George Foreman, a two-time former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Olympic gold medalist, and successful entrepreneur with The George Foreman Grill, is our best bet. With his book, “Knockout Entrepreneur,” everybody has a fair fighting chance, especially when it comes to being cool, fitting in, and making the best of our new year’s resolutions.

When it comes to being cool, Foreman offers advice from his book like:

  • Find a need and fill it – the secret to success is doing something that fills a need.

With the coming new year, are you looking to volunteer more? What are you passionate about? To whom can you lend a hand? Check out Volunteer Match for a list of potential organizations that you could help. Foreman believes that “once you find something you believe in, something you know will be helpful to other people, you will be over the toughest hurdle on your way to success.”

  • Listen to Your Corner – Every successful boxer has at least three people in his corner, helping him to be his best. Most importantly, never, ever allow a negative person to be in your corner.

What can you do to be your very best in the new year? Do you need to get something done to feel a sense of accomplishment? Who can you ask for help? Knowing who you can turn to when you need something is important. Just as important is to avoid the people who only offer negative advice, the people who are always telling you why a project won’t work. Stick with the people who believe in you and “get” you.

  • Never Listen to the Crowd – Usually the crowd doesn’t know what you are really about.

Everybody has advice on how you can be better. Sometimes, the crowds we hang out with have really small ideas. What’s important is to keep in mind what we believe in. Foreman is quoted as saying, “That's my gift. I let that negativity roll off me like water off a duck's back. If it's not positive, I didn't hear it. If you can overcome that, fights are easy.”

  • Make It Good – Some people say being successful is all about luck – being at the right place at the right time. However, Foreman found the opposite to be true, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.”

Never wait for things to get better. Make them better. Want a better grade in a class? Ask the teacher what you can do to attain the grade you want.

Foreman closes his book with a chapter on celebrating your success. Interestingly enough, he immediately gets to the heart of the matter. He says, “You have achieved enough of your goals that you can kick back and enjoy.”

What this great boxer, this great social entrepreneur stresses is that everything you set your mind to is achievable, with goals. So, this new year’s resolution…no matter what it is you want to achieve in the new year…make it your goal. Forget resolutions. Set an achievable goal and create the game plan around it.

You can do this.
