How clean is your yoga mat?

You don’t have to be a clean freak to wonder (or even worry) about what type of bacteria or viruses might be lurking on the surface of that mat you’re about to use for the yoga class at your local studio. Common cold? Poison Oak? Swine flu?

Just to affirm your possible worries (and I am not trying to deride any yoga studios here!), when I owned my own studio, I must admit, we probably didn’t clean the mats as much as we could have or should have. In fact, as a sole proprietor, the prospect of washing so many mats at once was overwhelming. I was never even sure about the “right” way to clean the mats. First, I tried using my washing machine at home. It took about 20 loads and I couldn’t figure out how to dry them. The dryer seemed like a poor option; and they took forever to dry hanging on a line outside. I tried a commercial disinfectant spray, and students complained about the “toxic” odor. I tried a natural mat cleaner. That worked better (although it still took me a long time and a lot of scrubbing!).

According to one source in the United Kingdom (see “Germs In Your Gym Bag.” http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-444864/Germs-gym-bag.html), the average gym mat contains 100,000 bacteria per square centimeter, in addition to occasional molecules of fecal matter!
Now, the last thing I want to do is to scare you away from yoga class or discourage you from borrowing a mat from your local studio. That said, if you cannot or do not wish to buy your own mat, consider bringing a bottle of an effective natural cleanser with you to class.
Although the chance of “catching” anything from your yoga mat is rare, here is a list of possible natural cleaners you can bring to class with you, just as a precaution:

Enjoy your class in good health!

You may want to check out the new product called Safe Side Workout Towel that was designed for this kind of thing. You can find it at athleteoutfitters.com

I just got a Microban Yoga Mat from YogaDirect.com
It has a antimicrobial and anti-fungal barrier on it so it repels germs and even stays cleaner in between cleanings. I have noticed it doesn't stink after Bikram class like my old mat did :)
