Off The Mat, Into The World takes yoga to a new level. This inspirational organization encourages people to take all they have learned in their yoga practice on the mat and bring it into the community. It is where asana, pranyama, and meditation culminate into an in-service group project to make a difference in the world. For those of you who have been searching for a way to express oneself, to realize and actualize your purpose in life, Off The Mat, Into The World (OTM) can help you discover your way to give back.
Based in Venice, California, Off The Mat, Into The World creators Seane Corn, Hala Khouri, and Suzanne Sterling are committed to supporting grassroots change through personal empowerment, community collaboration and local and global activism. Seane explains: “Off The Mat means taking everything you’ve learned on the mat, strength, compassion, focus, and flexibility and extending it out so that everything you do, you do in the name of love.”
The curriculum is divided into four parts:
* Self-Inquiry: Who Am I? What is my Purpose? What does it look like for me to live on purpose?
* Interdependence: Understanding our connection to the world around us.
* Community: Practical tools and skills in communication, collaboration, organization
and strategy
* Action: Creating and initiating a project that makes a difference.
Join Off The Mat, Into The World’s Seva Challenge 2009. Seva means “service”. In Sikhism, seva refers to selfless service for altruistic purposes on behalf of, and for the betterment of a community. A project of The Engage Network, this year’s Seva Challenge is “Bare Witness: African Humanitarian Tour”. Donations are welcome. To participate in the journey to Africa, you need to raise $20,000 by November 15, 2009. The actual trip to Uganda takes place February 7-19, 2010. This particular project’s purpose is to:
• make a permanent significant difference through Seva in the lives of some of the world’s most impoverished children.
• find leaders in the yoga community who are capable of building a team of support and becoming potential leaders in the emerging social change movement.
• have an experience as a community of purpose, deep community and taking action.
In last year’s Seva Challenge, OTM mobilized over 100 leaders to raise $524,000 in support of the Cambodian Children’s Fund and local community projects. They have also trained over 300 leaders nationwide in becoming effective and sustainable activists within their community.
