In a remarkable expression of how yoga has touched American--and international--culture in the 21st century, on Thursday, Jan. 26, San Francisco International Airport celebrated the opening of what is believed to be the world's first airport-based yoga studio, in Terminal 2. In addition to being SFO's hub for the passport-bearing flyer, the terminal serves American Airlines and Virgin America.
Formerly a storage closet, the Yoga Room waits just beyond security (i.e. for travelers only). It is currently unattended, but provides a dimly-lit, mat- and prop-equipped environment for the traveling yogi. A place to stretch or balance, decompress or attitude-adjust, complete with a no-shoes and quiet policy in place.
Gives a whole new meaning to the word Layover.
A word of warning to "layovers," that is, people who may savasana their way through a connection: there is no clock in the yoga room. One thing sure to blow your balance would be missing your flight, no matter how blissed-out.
