Some yogis thrive on the rote flow, the repetitive motion of their favorite asana sequences. But if you're not one of them, and you're itching to get out of your yogic comfort zone, consider taking advantage of Monkey Yoga Shala's twist on tradition.
Located on Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland, Monkey Yoga Shala offers a blend of yogi staples -- Vinyasa, Ashtanga -- along side their signature style of IMY, or Isometric Monkey Yoga. Described on the studio's website as "the synthesis of Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga, dance and martial arts principles," IMY is a distinctive switch from standard approach to either yoga, dance, or weight training that simultaneously incorporates the essence of each discipline. The classes are accessible yet challenging to all student levels, and taught by instructors who are prepared to offer modifications whenever necessary.
In keeping with the dance-inspired elements of IMY, the studio also offers CampYoga, developed and taught by instructor Laura Camp. Hers is a fast-paced, Vinyasa-style class set to music and infused with spirituality, community, and a deep respect for individual pace and practice.
With so many options, and so many opportunities for expansive and dynamic practice, Monkey Yoga Shala is now making it even easier for interested students to try their hand(s) at Monkey Yoga. The studio is currently offering a new student deal that includes two weeks of classes with four different instructors (adding up to as many as 3 qualifying classes per day) for a flat $20 fee. Students can come as often as they like during the two weeks and try all the styles and speeds they want before committing to a regularly priced class package or membership. Monkey Yoga Shala's website includes a full schedule of classes, including those available in the new student package.
Monkey Yoga Shala is located at 3215 Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland, CA.
