September is National Yoga Month, and San Diego County offers numerous fun yoga events throughout the month. One such event is a celebration of the Fall Equinox, which will be held at La Jolla Cove on Sunday, September 26th at 9:00am. Prana Yoga Center and lululemon athletica-La Jolla Yoga Ambassador, Ingrid Yang, invite you to a moving, meditative practice of 108 Sun Salutations on the grass area above the Cove. This is a free event and everyone is invited, regardless of yoga experience.
The 'Mala', which is what the 108 Sun Salutations practice is called, refers to the number of mantra beads on a mala garland; an ancient tool used for meditative transformation, still utilized today. This Mala will be broken into four sets of 27 salutations, with short rest breaks between sets. The entire practice is estimated to take around 1.5 hours. Please keep in mind that completing all 108 Salutations in not mandatory - you can join in and participate for as many cycles as you feel comfortable doing.
Because our bodies follow the same rhythms as Nature, this Mala practice focuses on slowing down our pace and letting go of of the active energy and expansion we experienced in the summer months. Like the trees, we can unburden ourselves from those objects and actions that no longer serve our purpose, and prepare to draw our energies inward.
Each of the four sets of salutations have a dedicated, meditative focus. The first set is dedicated to the Self, and concentrates energy on the manifestation of deepened Self-awareness and the positive qualities of love, healing and personal transformation. The second set is devoted to thoughts of compassion for family and friends. The powerful group energy of the third round of salutations provides a directs positive feelings toward positive changes to the Earth and its people. And the final series is a time to connect with the expansiveness of the Universe and the positive feelings of joy and profound gratitude.
Bring a mat, some water, your best pals and a joyful heart to celebrate the change of the seasons with a powerful, life-changing practice. Whether you practice all, or just a few salutations, the energy of the morning will benefit everyone!
