Yoga studio etiquette guidelines

Yoga studio etiquette is easy to practice!
Yoga class etiquette will vary from studio to studio, but here are a few general ideas to get you started before you take your first class or venture into a new studio.
  1. Turn off your cell phone before you arrive.  If you have a special situation going on, then keep it on vibrate and let the instructor know that you might have to step out to use the phone during class.
  2. Arrive a few minutes early and try not to leave before the class has finished.  If you have a special situation, then try to let your instructor know.
  3. Check to see if you need to remove your shoes and leave them outside the studio or at the back of the room.
  4. Dress in comfortable clothing that lets you stretch and move.  *Tanks are always better than t-shirts because they stay against your body so you can go into inversions without worrying about your shirt flying up.
  5. Be quiet when you enter the yoga studio.  Of course, some environments are casual and yoga students will quietly catch up before class, so just read the environment when you walk in the room.
  6. Quietly unroll your mat.  This takes a little longer, but it's better than whip-snapping your mat with thunderbolt enthusiasm.  (Read here for a bit of humor about those who unroll their yoga mats with a little too much enthusiasm.)
  7. Don't talk during the yoga class unless the instructor has encouraged you to and/or you have an emergency.  This may seem obvious, but this wouldn't have made the list if it wasn't a common occurrence.
  8. Don't worry about the levels or abilities of the students around you.  Relax, enjoy yourself and do your best!
