The fundamentals of an outdoor yoga practice are the same as an indoor practice. However, an outdoor practice does provide additional benefits to any yoga practice. In Portland a routine outdoor practice is not very practical. During the few glorious months of the year an outdoor practice is well worth a try.
Decreased Distractions
• All environments have their distractions, but in an outdoor practice they are limited. A mind races despite the environment. When practicing outdoors, the mind is not as focused on the inadvertent classmates. No competing. Just the individual. Classmates tends to dissolve into the background even in an outdoor classes with multiple attendants.
Increased oxygen
• In an enclosed class the amount of oxygen is limited to that which is already present. The attendants can only produce more carbon dioxide. Take it outdoors and the number of plant-life far number the individuals attending. If the weather permits, why not take it outside?
Vitamin D
• Sun exposure is one the most prevalent and easiest way to provide the body with vitamin D. Vitamin D is needed for bone growth and strength, and has been correlated with decreasing the risk for cancer.
Studios in the sun state, California, hold outdoor yoga classes. Perhaps in the future Portland will also host seasonal outdoor yoga classes.
