Can laughter improve a yoga practice?

Joe Rogan | mmaconvert.com

Yogic breathing develops lung function to sustain intense laughter sessions, but is there more to yoga and comedy? Joe Rogan is not only a comedian, he is an athlete who practices yoga.

On Saturday, Aug 24, 2009 the UFC was held in the Rose Garden headlining Randy Couture and Antonio Nogueria. Part of the UFC crew included Joe Rogan who performed at a local favorite, the Aladdin, on Friday night. The venue was so crowded attendees stood lining the walls. During his routine, Rogan mentioned he is a yoga practitioner.

Initial jokes by comedians tend to refer to yoga’s eccentric practices. Check out this utube featuring Graham Norton, an Irish actor/comedian talking with yoga teacher Emily Collins. As you may have experienced yourself, yogis are constantly being teased. Let’s face it, a yoga practice can develop a good sense of humor. How else can one respond after all of those falls from balancing poses?

Of course there are other benefits to adopting laughter into your life. For instance, this yoga class practices various facial contortions to exercise the facial muscles. It is believed that this type of yoga can decrease facial wrinkles and leave the face looking more radiant.

Dr. Madan Kataria has spread a style of yoga that is centered around laughter called Laughter Yoga or Hasya Yoga. As a medical doctor from Mumbai, he has become known as the ‘Guru of Giggling’ by the London times. The practice is spreading internationally and in our own city of Portland. Some say “fake it before you make it” in relation to growing professionally. Laughter yoga can be viewed similarly. “Fake it before you make it” emotionally.

Give it a try. What is there to lose?

*Please notify roommates or family members before laughing hysterically for unknown reasons. That is unless you just want them to wonder.

Namaste.
