Go home to Yoga X

The 6 p.m. yoga class began 15 minutes ago. Traffic on the 405 is gnarly driving home from work, the babysitter is late, the line at the bank was too slow, the dog needs walking, and the frustration sets in. It has been one week since the last workout or yoga class and the discomfiture of inactivity is moving into moodiness and irritability.

Enter Tony Horton’s Yoga X, one of the twelve P90X home training fitness DVDs. P90X is a comprehensive system of rigorous workout regimens that are designed to increase cardiovascular capability, muscle tone, strength, and flexibility. A different body part and routine is practiced throughout the week and over the course of several weeks and months. If followed strictly, the workouts increase in intensity. The program is complimented with a nutritional component to maximize results.

Yoga X is a vigorous 90 minute vinyasa flow yoga practice. It begins with opening stretches and moves into the classic Sun Salutations in the tradition of Ashtanga Yoga. The practice progresses from the heated standing poses to balance postures into the cooling floor poses. The abdominal portion, at the tail end of the class, develops deep core strength with a sigh of relief when it is over.

For the practitioner who desires a less extreme practice P90X offers X Stretch. Yoga stretch is a 60 minute class which focuses on flexibility and elongation in the standing and floor poses rather than the more challenging vinyasa flow practice.

The poses are held long enough to allow for the full benefits of breath control, focus, endurance, flexibility, and coordination. Tony Horton’s verbal instructions are informative and easy to follow as are the visual postures performed by the participants of the class. Throughout the class he emphasizes the benefits of yoga and its importance in relation to other physical disciplines and sports.

A local Beverly Hills teenage boy had this to say about P90X and Yoga X, specifically.

“I wanted to start working out but was not ready to join a gym. One of my friends told me about P90X. I researched it and decided to order it. I had to buy the free weights and so it became a bit of an investment. I made a commitment to follow the routine as closely as directed. I didn’t follow the nutritional guide except to say I eat healthy and made sure to balance my protein with my carbs. After about a month I saw my body change and I got stronger, more cut, and faster.  Yoga was new to me. I couldn’t believe how hard it was to touch my toes and do a backbend. I think yoga was the hardest part of the whole program. There were days I wanted to skip it. After a while I got the hang of it and looked forward to that feeling of relaxation after the DVD was over. It helped with my overall flexibility doing the other routines. One day I went to Greville Henwood’s yoga class at Sports Club/LA, now Equinox, in Beverly Hills and was able to do the whole class without a problem. I was really proud of myself.”

Yoga X and Yoga Stretch can stand on their own as a complete home yoga practice benefiting both body and mind. The DVD allows for a background music option with voice-over creating a relaxed atmosphere. Light some candles, dim the lights, silence the phone, and breathe your stress away. Yoga X is ready when you are.
