Yoga 101: What is Bikram Yoga?

Bikram yoga is a series of 26 specific postures that are performed in a designated sequence, in a room that is heated to approximately 105 degrees. The postures and the order in which they are performed are always the same. Many yoga studios offer “hot yoga” classes that are also performed in a heated room, but a class cannot be considered a Bikram class unless it follows the patented Bikram sequence and is taught by a certified Bikram instructor.

Why is the sequence of postures so important?

Ustrasana (Camel Pose): one of the 26 postures that make up
the Bikram Yoga sequence

Bikram yoga is designed to systematically move fresh, oxygenated blood throughout the body and restore all the body’s systems to healthy working order. Bikram yoga creates a tourniquet effect in the body: contracting and stretching the muscles in certain ways creates pressure that restricts the blood flow to arteries and veins. When the posture is released, fresh blood is allowed to return to the area, flushing out arteries and veins and helping the body eliminate toxins. The particular series of postures in Bikram yoga allows this process to occur in an order that provides the most benefit to the entire body. Each pose creates a foundation for the next.

Why is the room heated?

Practicing yoga in a heated room allows for deeper stretching while protecting the muscles. The heat allows the muscles to work in an optimal state, helping to build strength and prevent injury. Heat opens pores to let toxins out, thins the blood for better circulation, and increases the heart rate for a better cardiovascular workout.

What are the benefits of Bikram yoga?

Bikram yoga has been shown to provide numerous physical and emotional benefits. It can help reduce stress, increase blood circulation and lung capacity, increase muscle strength, keep joints lubricated, relieve back pain, and boot the immune system. It can also help create a sense of wellbeing, balance the emotions, improve concentration and patience, and provide a greater sense of determination and self-control. Students of Bikram yoga relay testimonials of how their practice has healed them from conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, rosacea and other skin conditions, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, migraines, back pain, and even cancer.

Who created Bikram yoga?

Bikram Yoga was created by Bikram Choudhury, who was born in Calcutta in 1946. When he was just four years old, Bikram began practicing yoga under Bishnu Ghosh, younger brother of Paramahansa Yogananda, who wrote the popular book Autobiography of a Yogi. At that time, yoga was taught one-on-one. At the age of 11, Bikram became the youngest person ever to win the National India Yoga Competition; he was undefeated for the next three years. Bikram worked directly with his guru to create a standardized series of poses that would address the most common health ailments and would still be easy enough for beginners to practice.

Can I do Bikram yoga if I am a beginner?

It is a common misconception that you have to be flexible in order to practice yoga. True yoga is about recognizing and honoring the needs and abilities of your own body. When performed correctly, Bikram yoga can benefit anyone, regardless of experience or fitness level.

What else should I know about Bikram yoga?

You may feel nauseated, dizzy, or very tired after your first few classes. This is a normal reaction as your body begins to cleanse itself. Drinking plenty of water throughout the course of the day, before and after your yoga class, will help your body eliminate toxins. Limiting caffeine intake and cutting down on processed foods can also improve your body’s ability to tolerate the heat.

Do not eat for 1-3 hours prior to class. A light meal of easily digestible food is recommended as the final meal you eat before class.

You may feel sore or stiff the day after your first class; this is also normal. Continuing your yoga practice and returning to class as soon as possible will help your muscles continue to come alive and become accustomed to the postures. Unlike with other forms of exercise, it is not necessary to take a day of rest from yoga. You can practice yoga every day without overtaxing the body. It is recommended to practice yoga at least three times a week for maximum benefit.
