Next weekend, May 29-31, independent Colorado yoga studios are joining together to “Spark the Fire,” a first-time event to inspire community consciousness and generate support for those struggling in today’s difficult economic climate. Inspired by President Barack Obama’s call for Americans to contribute to the communities in which they live, the event is a fundraiser with proceeds going to benefit several non-profit organizations.
“The big question being asked of all of us today is ‘How can I contribute?’ The ‘What’s in it for me?’ mentality just won’t work anymore,” says Spark the Fire organizer and respected local Anusara instructor Madhuri Martin. “Those who thrive in this time of uncertainty will be those who can understand how to create and strengthen the values that aid us in transitioning from a culture of ‘me first’ to one of ‘community first.’”

“Spark the Fire – Igniting Yoga and Conscious Community” is expected to draw as many as 1,000 Colorado yoga practitioners to the New Hope Baptist Church on Colorado Boulevard. The event is the first sponsored by the new Colorado Yoga Studio Collective (CYSC) which is dedicated to sustaining independent yoga studios and teachers and maintaining the health and well-being of the Colorado yoga community. Its lineup features internationally known presenters like diversity author and educator Martin Prechtel, Native American activist Evon Peter, and world-renowned meditation instructor to inmates Katchie Ananda, who will explore the opportunities for and challenges of building strong, supportive communities in today’s economy. Music for daytime yoga workshops (taught by local luminaries like Desi and Micah Springer) as well as the Saturday evening event will be provided by kirtan singer/songwriter Leraine Horstmanshoff. There will also be a special African dance celebration on Saturday afternoon led by Ghanian music professor Nii Armah Sowah.
