This week's DeathSpank protip: homemade skeleton xylophones
As someone who "wasted" the majority of their free time for a couple of years playing Diablo II I'm really excited by the way Ron Gilbert's DeathSpank is shaping up. The game promises to mitigate some of the grind from the hack and slash rpg by introducing elements of action games complete with puzzles that not only progress the storyline but reward the player with xp. Since we're on story progression, DeathSpank's team boasts it will provide, "A real story...not a crappy video game story!" over the course of an estimated 15 hours. Specifics are still hard to come by but it appears that like many great stories, DeathSpank begins with a fall. Like a college student home immediately after graduation, it would seem that you have acquired everything you could desire. Life is sweet, you have "the artifact," which is the rpg equivalent of a car and a credit card. However, you find yourself torn from your artifact and your gear and must make your way in the world anew. If only "adventurer" was still a valid career path...
While you can get a sense of Deathspank's quirky humor and the awesome stylized art (in what I like to call a 2.5D universe) from the video, I'd recommend checking out Christopher Grant's interview with Gilbert for a more detailed account.

more of that quirky, satiric humor.
