On Friday, SEGA announced details of their new Sonic title Project Needlemouse. After a five-day trivia countdown of what characters would be in the game, we now know that it’s only the blue hedgehog himself that players will be able to use.

In fact, Sonic will be the game’s only main protagonist as there will be no other memorable NPC’s like Knuckles or Tails. Not even the title character, Mr. Needlemouse, will be available to play.

Project Needlemouse will follow the trend of Capcom’s Mega Man franchise, taking it’s latest entry back to its 2D side scrolling roots.

Other than being expected to come out this year, no official release date has been set. The game is expected to be available for download on Xbox Live, the PlayStation Network and the Wii.

It is still unkown whether or not "Project Needlemouse" will be the subtitle (AKA "Sonic: Project Needlemouse") or the game's full name.
