This spring, Xbox 360 gamers will get a healthy helping of nostalgia thanks to Tecmo Bowl Throwback. Finally confirmed, Throwback is a redo of the title that graced the Super Nintendo way back in the day...two decades back in the day, actually. Developer Southend Interactive brings back the early days of console-based football, allowing North American gamers the opportunity to relive "the first video game that emulated real football".
The popular Preseason, Season, and Pro Bowl modes return, this time with a facelift. At the link above, Tecmo Bowl Throwback claims to present both 2D and 3D play, featuring the option of choosing whichever presentation best fits the player. Interest is now piqued.
Online multiplayer is obviously a new feature as well, serving as a considerable upgrade since the days of local multiplayer. This time around you don't even have to clean the house and buy snacks, as you will be free to host games with Xbox LIVE. Another perk to this upgrade? Your buddies won't be able to make fun of you for playing in your pajamas.
The 32 teams and their rosters can be customized, catering to an era of fantasy football fans. Want to reenact the Super Bowl with Pirates and Ninjas? Feel free to do just that, tweaking variables accordingly. Just know that the Ninjas have the odds behind them.
When you're done smearing your friends' faces in the turf, go online against other opponents. Online leaderboards will highlight those at the top of their game, giving aspiring Throwbackers a goal to aim for (or names to take). Leave your rivals seething as you surge past them on your way to the top of the charts.
While there's no word on pricing just yet, Tecmo Bowl Throwback is a welcome addition to the digital download library. Older generations of gamers will reminisce of the infamous Bo Jackson zigzag routes from the franchise's early days, while newer players will receive a workshop on what sports games looked like before Madden's face was plastered all over them. Throwback is long overdue.
