Fate of Carmine campaign ruins Gears 3 storyline

Voting for the Fate of Carmine campaign begins tomorrow, July 29th, on Xbox LIVE. If you aren't sure of what this is exactly, for the first time in franchise history, fans are going to be able to choose the fate of a character in Gears of War 3. With both of his brothers from previous games dead, Clayton Carmine is the last surviving brother. Will he live through Gears of War 3 or will he also bite the dust? You can decide!

How do you vote? Starting tomorrow there will be two new Gears of War 3 avatar T-shirts available for purchase on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. One is red and says "Carmine Must Die" across the front and the other is black and instead reads "Save Carmine." Purchasing either of these shirts will cast your vote for that specific outcome. They won't be free downloads but no specific price has been given yet (probably around 80-160 Microsoft Points as avatar shirts usually are). Don't fret over having to pay to vote, however, because all profits are being donated to the Child's Play Charity.

Since Microsoft has already confirmed that Gears of War 3 will conclude the current story arc, Epic Games may have inadvertently spoiled a bit of the storyline with the Fate of Carmine campaign. If Clayton has the option to live through the game, then obviously the planet must have been saved from the Locust/Lambent infestation or otherwise he would have died along with all the rest of the protagonists no matter how the fans voted. Before now, it seemed as if things really could have gone either way. Gears of War 3 wouldn't have been the first game series to have ended in tragedy. For example, at the end of Army of Two: the 40th Day (spoiler alert), players are given the option to murder one of the two main characters. This contest is sort of an anticlimactic way of discovering that the COG (or what remains of them) finally win the war and save the planet, wouldn't you say?

Gears of War 3 is slated to be released next April on the Xbox 360. For more information on the Fate of Carmine campaign or Child's Play, check out this article on the official Gears of War website.

I think you are truly insane.

Carmine can die and the planet can still be saved. He can get shot in the 2nd level or even at the end, but the rest of the team can still survive. It's a pretty simple concept.

Also, there is an issue with this: I don't want the story to be decided by a fan vote. Let the writers decide, not morons on Xbox Live.

Uh yeah...you aren't understanding the article. If he dies, then it wouldn't ruin the story. Sure he can die and they could win. Or he could die and they could lose. But if he lives, then obviously they CAN'T lose because if they did, he would die regardless of how the fans vote.

The very fact that he could be allowed to live by fan vote reveals that the COG win and save the planet otherwise him living wouldn't even be an option.

No, I don't think you are understanding.

They can lose and not have to die. They can be captured or enslaved or just lose the war.

Losing a war doesn't mean everyone dies. Perhaps they come to a truce and team up with the Locust to fight Lambents. There are TONS of possiblities and you are obviously jumping the gun here.

And let's be honest, they aren't going to lose.

Epic has already said that there is no way the Locust and COG ever team up and that it will never, ever happen. As for being taken prisoner, remember what happened to Dominic's wife when she was taken in Gears of War 2? I don't think that is even a possibility.

Yeah and devs lie all the time to preserve storyline surprises.

The point is, you have no idea what is going to happen.

And the COG is going to win. It's not like Gears has a story worth caring about anyway

Uhh, just a thought, even if this is a really old article. What if Carmine is the ONLY survivor, and the end cutscene simply features him rising from the ashes of the destroyed area you were defending, implying he intends to either go into hiding, or pull a DOOM Marine and kill every monstrous mofo that gets in his way until he eventually (post-game events of course) falls.
