Seems like space is in the news a lot these days and Disney has been inspired by NASA to create a cool educational contest for American children and your homeschool child can participate!
Last September, a “Buzz Lightyear” action figure came back to Earth after 15 months aboard the International Space Station. It has been a tradition for NASA astronauts to design a commemorative patch to act as a symbol of every mission they have completed, so Disney and Buzz are asking for the help of American children to design a patch for his mission.
Disney has set up a website to help children create their own unique patch at www.DisneyParks.com/Buzz. and to enter the contest. In addition to the patch costume for 6-12 year olds, there are some additional science contests for older students at the NASA website.

Children can go to the site, using templates and art work from previous NASA badges as well as a host of new creative Disney elements to design their entry into a contest to be selected as the winning Buzz Lightyear NASA badge. In addition to the actual design, children must submit a brief essay describing their design. The entries can be submitted via email or by regular mail.
As part of this challenge, children will also learn about the requirements of space flight and the science involved in NASA programs. And what could they win?
A trip for the entire family (up to four) to stay at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and take a VIP tour of the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida is the grand prize!
The DEADLINE is NOVEMBER 6,2009, so hurry and put together your entry this week! Get cracking! Wouldn't it be awesome if a homeschool student won this award? Thanks to

Thanks also goes to Science Examiner, Anna Sanclement who wrote a great article on the new photos of the Milky Way. Go check them out at her blog to see hundreds of newly developed images! They just might spark your child's imagination and create a future astronomer or space explorer.
