Los Angeles has a love affair with stars. For decades the City of Angels has basked in the sparkle of Hollywood's brightest illuminaries. More recently, sports figures like Kobe Bryant of the Lakers and Manny Rodriguez of the Dodgers have dazzled the local populace.
Now there is a new star in the galaxy--Evan Lysacek has become the 2009 Wold Figure Skating men's free skate champion with a stellar performance in the Staples Center before an ecsatic local crowd.
Lysacek, who moved to Los Angeles to train some time ago, admits he is no stranger to the Staples Center venue where he is usually watching the Lakers perform on hardwood floors instead of the ice he dominated last night.
The gold medalist performed to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue showing off spectacular footwork and completing eight triple jumps. Skating with a stress fracture in his left foot, Lysacek did not even attempt the quadruple jumps that have become usual in men's figure skating.
Lysacek looks ahead now to the Olympics where he hopes to repeat his win in the Wold Championships. In recent history, however, that has not been the case. In Vancouver 2010, he will likely face Brian Joubert of France who had come into the World Championships as the odds on favorite this year.
No doubt Evan Lysacek will now find out about something LA's other stars know all too well--the paparazzi. And it is doubtful if he will ever feel the same each time he walks into the Staples Center to attend a Lakers game.
