Number 2—Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton kept the headlines sizzling during the course of their two marriages to each other. When the star of such films as Joan of Arc and The Bells of Saint Mary’s gave birth to a son, not by her husband but by Italian film director Roberto Rossellini, the moral indignation of the 1950s literally drove Bergman out of the country until her triumphful return in an Academy Award winning role as Anastasia. What was a scandal when it began became a love story of dramatic proportions.
Number 8—Sophia Loren and Carlo Ponti met and fell in love while he was still married in Italy, a country that, at the time, did not allow divorce. Although Ponti obtained a Mexican divorce, it was not recognized in his home country and he and Loren were forced to annul their Mexican marriage. Later the pair became French citizens, Ponti got his divorce, and they entered into a 50-year marriage that lasted until Ponti’s death in January of 2007.
