Good news or bad news first?
Let’s start with the good.
Torrey Smith returned an NC State kickoff 82 yards, his third kickoff return for a touchdown in his career (a school record). Smith also had 8 catches for 64 yards and totaled 268 all purpose yards in the game. He also broke his own ACC record for most kickoff return yards in a season (1,113).
Linebacker Alex Wujciak picked off NC State quarterback Russell Wilson and rumbled into the end zone 70 yards later for Maryland’s first defensive touchdown in 3 years.
Next week the Terps get to sport camouflage uniforms in collaboration with Under Armour and the Wounded Warrior Project (PICS HERE).
It’s almost Thanksgiving.
And the bad….
First play of the game from scrimmage: Chris Turner interception by Willie Young. 52 seconds later, NC State 7, Maryland 0. Any microscopic feelings of optimism Terp fans still enjoyed died right then and there.
Chris Turner’s sprained MCL may keep him out for the rest of the season; his injury’s severity is yet to be determined. Back-up, now starter, Jamarr Robinson’s first snap of the game? Fumble. Yup, things are looking up.
Penalties, Penalties, Penalties…
Sacks, Sacks, Sacks….
Inability to run the ball…or protect the quarterback for longer than it just took you to read this sentence.
Promising freshman defensive end Isaiah Ross tore his ACL ending his season. Ralph Friedgen expressed frustration with the injury, lamenting, “I think it was really uncalled for. The guy (player Ross was engaged with should have been thrown out of the game. [The referees] didn’t even see it, which doesn’t surprise me.” Defensive tackle Travis Ivey explained, “The guy just basically, after the play, just speared him in his leg and then jumped on top of him and started like hitting him when he was on top of him.”
Friedgen said of Robinson, “I thought he did an incredible job.” If 5 of 11 passing for 27 yards and rushed nine times for 38 yards is “incredible” then the Fridge has officially lost it.
Next week an angry Virginia Tech team comes to College Park. I have never and will never claim to be anything more than an average mathematician, but I have a general recollection about how inequalities work.
Basically….
VT defense, special teams > UMD back-up quarterback, make-shift offensive line
Let’s visualize this metaphor using pure, innocent pee-wee football…..
Now is the time for Maryland to get players much needed game experience and to start looking towards the 2010 season.
