At least they knew they made a mistake.
In a recent e-mail, the athletic department acknowledged their failure to consider the repercussions of the new student ticketing policy rewarding students who arrive early for games:
Dear Students,
Maryland Athletics recently launched a program that would award bonus points to students who arrived early for men's basketball games.
Since we announced the program, we have heard from several students with well-articulated and logical arguments that this new program might actually increase the practice of scan-and-leave.
Maryland Athletics intended for the program to reward loyal fans and to create a great atmosphere inside Comcast Center from the minute the doors open. However, the prospect of increasing the undesirable practice of scan-and-leave has encouraged us to reconsider. We have therefore decided to discontinue the bonus loyalty point program effective immediately. It is important to note that for all non-conference games, the timed-entry mechanism will not be used. Therefore, we strongly encourage all students to arrive early and cheer on our great team during warm-ups, all the way to tip-off and the final buzzer. Strong fan support on our home court can and does make a difference to our team!
The saying goes, “Admitting you have a problem is the first step.” Let’s hope that this not just a step, but the beginning of a long trek in the right direction.
Maryland’s season officially opens Friday at 8pm against Charleston Southern.
