Where were you when the University of Maryland lost to Duke….in football? Sure Duke is better than they used to be, but better is still relative; let there be no mistake, Duke is still a bottom of the bucket college football program. And, at least for this season, Maryland has joined them.
Coming into Saturday’s game, the least amount of points Duke had given up in a game was 14 to NC Central. No ACC team had scored less than 26 points against the Blue Devils. Maryland scored 13 points.
It’s easy to make excuses after the 17-13 defeat. The weather made things difficult. Well, it did for both teams, and Duke throws every down so it arguably affected them more. Did Duke’s receiver Connor Vernon push off against Terrapin cornerback Cameron Chism in order to make his touchdown catch? Probably. But one must also consider the fumble Duke put on the ground at the Maryland one yard line. These things tend to even out.
And just when it appeared as if Maryland was going to play a turnover free game, Chris Turner threw an interception in the fourth quarter while attempting to lead his team down the field for a go-ahead score. Then, just as Maryland was about to get the ball back for one last possession, Tony Logan muffed the punt, ending any chance Maryland had of making a comeback.
Maryland has now scored a grand total of one touchdown in the last two games, a 67 yard screen pass and run by Davin Meggett in the third quarter Saturday.
For the second straight week, the defense has played well enough to win, only to be let down by an offense whose appalling play has gone unrivaled in the Ralph Friedgen era. The offensive line is injury prone, inconsistent, and overall lacking in ACC caliber talent. Quarterback Chris Turner has not been able to get receiving playmakers Torrey Smith and Adrian Cannon the ball with any consistency or effectiveness.
What’s scary to think is that Maryland could easily be 0-8 instead of 2-6. Only last a last second defensive stand against Clemson and an overtime win against JMU have put Maryland in the win column.
But here’s the good news, I can personally guarantee Maryland will not lose next week.
It’s a bye week.
