One could argue that Maryland has been better than every team they have played this season (except Cal). They have simply beaten themselves. If they hadn’t made mistakes, they would have won.
But it is becoming increasingly apparent that Maryland’s mistakes are what define their team; it is not something that can be fixed because it is who they are. Mistakes are now the rule, not the exception. Terps fans now just groan at fumbles, interceptions, penalties, and dropped passes instead of getting angry when they happen.
A half-empty, rain soaked Byrd Stadium was treated to potentially the worst college football game played anywhere in the country on Saturday afternoon.
A simple positives and negatives breakdown should be helpful in dissecting the game:
Positives:
-
Free T-shirts for students
-
Outdoor shower
-
Memories of Maryland Madness from the previous night still fresh in fans’ minds
-
Defensive effort, held UVA to 201 total yards (though that may also be attributed to the conditions and Virginia’s ineptitude on offense)
-
Friedgen says that other quarterbacks may start to get some action- “We don’t start doing better, we got to start looking at the future too,” he said. “We definitely need to make a decision on how we want to go there. We’re definitely going to use Jamarr [Robinson], it’s just a question of whether we use O’Brien too.”
Friedgen has said that freshman quarterback Danny O’Brien has closed the backup gap with Robinson and may become the starter next year. This fact does not bode well for Robinson; one would think that a player who has been in College Park for three years would be leaps ahead of a true freshman in grasping the offense.
Negatives:
-
Chris Turner: 16/38, 158 yards, 2 INTs. Ouch.
-
Turnovers: 4 (not including the late turnover on downs)- Virginia’s Nate Collins returns a tipped pass 32 yards for a defensive touchdown
-
Three of Maryland’s biggest plays from scrimmage in the first half resulted in fumbles (lost 2)
-
Field Goals: After a solid start to the year and after making his first two attempts of the game, freshman kicker Nick Ferrara missed two important fourth quarter field goals.
-
Losing to UVA is almost as bad as losing to Duke…..and to add insult to injury, Maryland travels to Durham next week where they are 6-8 point underdogs against college football’s measuring stick for failure
