A mild stomach bug seems to be going around the dog park, with the only symptom a mild case of doggie diarrhea. In addition to laying off on treats for a few days, feeding a mild diet and keeping the dogs out of the lake for a bit, liquid Imodium can offer some relief.

Imodium, an anti-diarrheal drug that goes by the generic name Loperamide is available over the counter. Brand names are Imodium AD, Pepto Diarrhea Control and Kaopectate II Caplets. Check with a veterinarian before dosing a dog with any medication. The generally recommended dose of liquid Imodium is 1 ml per 1 lb. of dog, given every eight hours.

Imodium will relieve diarrhea, but it doesn't resolve the cause. If diarrhea lasts longer than 48 hours, a trip to the vet may be in order. Be aware that side effects of Imodium given to dogs may include bloat, lethargy or constipation.
