Blithe Spirit, the Noel Coward play that is currently playing at the Shubert Theatre in New York City, is scheduled to close on July 19th. The play which began previews back in February and officially opened on March 16th, marks the third time this 1941 show has run on Broadway.
The play is a comedy whose plot centers on a writer (Rupert Everett) who invites Madame Arcati (Angela Lansbury) to his home to hold a seance. In the process, the spirit of his departed wife (Christine Ebersole) accidently gets "contacted" and basically moves back into the house as a spirit. Odd things begin to happen as current wife Ruth (Jayne Atkinson) attempts to put order back into the house with surprising results.
The play is funny, well crafted, and well acted all around. Ms. Lansbury earned her 5th Tony Award for this role last week. One has a difficult time acknowledging that she is 83 years old. She moves on stage like an actor half her age and her presence gives the play an added dimension of believability. Additionally, Ms. Lansbury is well known for showing appreciation for her fans. She's known to come out the stage door and sign playbills and pose for pictures with those who have come to wish her well. Without a doubt, she is one of the grand ladies of the theatre.
The show is nicely priced and there are discounts for subscribers available on www.Playbill.com. There is also a terrific discount price for the rear balcony seats at all performances. If you love theatre and Angela Lansbury, get thee there soon!
