Jennifer Burgess admits her game plans sounds a little fishy. “Right now, I am crazy busy trying to get several major loose ends tied up so I can leave the country,” she said via email. Burgess resurfaced this week after virtually dropping out of society in June.
For three years she and Rebecca Thomas co-hosted the morning program ABC15 Daybreak on KNXV (Channel 15). Burgess' blond hair, ready smile and sense of genuineness were a hit with viewers, so many questions arose when Thomas announced that her on-air partner would be taking extended time off. For three months station management said little about Burgess’ disappearance. Then in September News Director Joe Hengemuehler confirmed to Examiner, “Jenn Burgess is no longer with ABC15 News.”
That pronouncement may have cleared the way for Burgess to pop up again. Just a week later, she launched a blog titled “Glimpse”, began reconnecting with friends, reclaimed her Twitter account and participated in an email correspondence with Examiner.com. As if this frenetic reappearance weren’t sudden and dramatic enough, she is frantically trying to secure a Visa that will enable her to hop a plane to India.
“Boy, that sounds sketchy, doesn't it-” she wrote, “former anchor high-tails it out of the country..." She trailed off on that thought and then offered to meet for coffee at some point. “I get back the middle of the first week in November... if I come back!! Ha ha. I might just fall in love with Bali or the Maldives and extend my stay...”
Online postings say she will visit her brother in India and then sightsee through Indonesia. She has promised to Tweet and report from along her travel route. That is, if she makes it out of the country. Burgess bought plane tickets for a rapidly-approaching departure date but still does not have all the documents necessary for international travel. She has commented that she may have to fly to San Francisco for an in-person appeal to expedite the Visa.
All of this may be interesting, but only serves as a distraction from what viewers have asked all along: “What happened between you and Channel 15?”
For now she points fans and friends to her new blog, which features an interview with herself—conducted by—herself. Unorthodox, yes, but apparently typical Burgess behavior. “I never do things the easy way - according to my mom.” The blog brushes off her own question about the constantly-changing hair color. First she gives herself a “No comment” and then finally, a dismissive “split ends.”
The closest readers get to understanding why Burgess and KNXV parted ways comes in a paragraph covering her ten-year history in broadcasting. “I’m so thankful for everything. However, I was exhausted. My contract was over. I really wanted new experiences.”
Burgess’ upcoming trip may satisfy that need for discovery.. but for how long? She hopes to return to broadcasting but also plans to pursue other passions of dance and fashion design.
It is not often one hears of a seemingly successful person who simply walks away from the life they’ve worked hard to establish. Some would say that is a courageous move. Others might call it running away. In either case, it takes determination, faith and a bit of a wild streak. Those are traits we all share, but with unequal distribution. The best anyone can do is to balance the unpredictability with a mature sense of responsibility and hope to make the best decisions for our future happiness.
Burgess will no doubt find adventure on this journey. She may also find herself.
