The Bikes not Bombs organization held their Green Roots Festival on Sunday June 7th in Jamaica Plain. The weather was perfect for an afternoon outdoors, though some of the bicyclists looked a bit warm after coming off the 62 mile bike ride.
Vendors and performers were quite creative for this event: one man had created a contraption overnight to power the microphone by human-power. Participants of the event could volunteer to peddle a stationary bicycle that charged a bank of batteries and in turn provided the electricity to run the microphones and speakers.
Island steel drums and Brazilian drummers provided entertainment and got the crowds moving! A favorite for children participating in the event was the slide hill - a cardboard covered hill was available for kids and adults to slide down. The big school bus powered by vegetable oil, or biodiesel, was also popular for all ages.
One booth featured human-powered displays to grind corn, turn the blades in a blender, or demonstrate washing laundry in a barrel. Children would climb onto the bicycle contraptions and take a turn at grinding corn, spinning the washing barrel or whirring the blender.
Overall this was a great family-friendly event to celebrate green living in Massachusetts. View the slideshow to see some of the fun participants had!
