As a follow up to this C-section rates on the rise, I am posting five ways to avoid a c-section.
1. Hire a doula. I'll have more about doulas later in the week, but having a doula is proven to lessen the need for medical interventions during labor and delivery.
2. Choose your practitioner and hospital carefully. Statistics are available that allow you to view primary and repeat c-section rates. This is a comprehensive list of Atlanta area hospitals and their rates. Atlanta Parent Online
3. Don't get induced unless medically necessary. What constitutes medical necessity? Reasons include high blood pressure, premature rupture of the membranes (water breaking), maternal infection or disease (kidney or chronic pulmonary disease), suspected fetal jeopardy, severe preeclampsia or toxemia.
4. Labor at home until you're approximately 3cm. How will you know? Good question, ask your doctor or midwife for their advice.
5. In the delivery room, ask questions if you are told you need to have a c-section.
