Finally! It's sunny out! By now most of the North Face fleeces have been peeled off of pale, vitamin D deprived bodies, and the Tevas and socks are making their grand debut on Seattle sidewalks. Forget the long days and browning front lawns, this is the first sign of summer in the Pacific Northwest.
When the sun is out, the sky is clear, and it's between three and six o'clock in the afternoon, my mind reverts to one thing: oyster happy hour on the deck at Elliott's Oyster House. For three beautiful hours you can slurp raw, local oysters to your heart's content, sip on some discounted hooch, and dip your spoon into a cup of intensely rich salmon bisque while looking out at the boats cruising the Puget Sound.
If you happen to be an oyster devotee, you know that the tasty little bivalves can be quite pricey. But at Elliott's progressive happy hour, a tasty little bugger can be yours for just two shiny quarters, if you stroll in by 3:00pm. The price goes up twenty-five cents every half hour until 6:00pm. They're crisp and cool, smack of sweet sea water, and are perfect with a dab of Elliott's icy champagne mignonette, a zippy pink sorbet spiked with shallots, peppercorn and lemon zest.
If you are a shuckaholic, try and pace yourself. Each table is limited to three dozen happy hour priced oysters. But you can always treat yourself to the full price fare, and order up a variety pack of oysters, choosing from over 30 varieties. They all taste mighty fine with a $3 happy hour microbrew or a $4 martini.
