While waiting for a friend I was double parked on Pennsylvania Ave. Eastern Market Area, and I saw a sign the Remix Vintage Fashion Shop. I punch the hazard light button and dash in for a quick glance that turned into 20mins of vintage heaven. 50’s, 60s’, 70’s, not poodle skirts, denim dungarees and bell bottom pants; but back in the day class and piazzas with ultra femininity. When you enter the shop colors are splashed all over your peripheral vision, you’re greeted by classic women’s fashions that have not gone out of style with the change of the millennium. Styles and designers that are still relevant today and will be forever from Gucci to Ferragamo and more.
In business for seven years five of them in the Del Ray area of Alexandria, Virginia Stacey DiTata is the owner of this gem nestled in the ever evolving Eastern Market area of Washington, D.C. The area is under a total renovation since the fires that destroyed the market a few years ago. The market will be re-opening for business with a ribbon cutting on Friday, June 26.
Stacey started her career as a visual merchandiser for Woodward & Lothrop (Woody's) back when it was located downtown in the Metro Center area, and you can see her talent on display as you walk in and through her lovely shop. Your eye’s are drawn to just about every piece. Her passion is classic 50’s mode there are vintage Vogue magazine covers adorning the walls, Audrey Hepburn photos', James Dean photos and Marilyn Monroe done in a classic Andy Warhol style, pill box hats, costume jewelry, and one of a kind hand beaded dresses from Japan.
This two level shop also offers home furnishings for the vintage fanatic in you, some pieces I would say are absolute must haves even in this new age of technology. Men’s clothing is a newest addition to the shop men can shop for ties, collar shirts, polo shirts and light weight jackets.
And for the fashion historian in you make an appointment to walk through the velvet rope and set your eyes on some one of a kind pieces from the 30’s and 40’s fashion era. This section was a treasure chest for me as a fashion design major, metal chain purses from the 1920's-30's vintage Gucci and flapper garments from the jazz era and the list goes on and on.
I fell in love with many of the items old and new at the Remix one item that especially caught my eye was a black mini dress by Garfinkles with four deep pockets two on the chest front and two at the waist with large flat top satin covered buttons absolutely gorgeous dress.
Many of the items are from estates sales or given to her by customers willing to part with a few of their fashions, she finds treasures in anything she receives. The shop is for the girlie girl in us all bright candy colored jewels, soft dresses, simple and soft hats echoing an era when hats were a part of every womens wardrobe, white gloves, cardigans and broaches to adorn them. Many styles you will find are very relevant today on the covers of magazines and in your favorite modern shops but at half the price here.
The Remix is a vintage haven with a mix of modern flair, a place to shop till you drop for people of all fashion sense and sensibilities.
