Food, Inc.

“From seed to the supermarket,” food is an industry. A new film about the industry, Food, Inc., opened last Friday. Unfortunately, no theater in Nashville is showing it. Until that happens or the DVD is released, the movie trailer is available below.

“The companies don’t want farmers talking. They don’t want this story told.” Is that why the movie is not in a local theater?

“This isn’t just about what we’re eating. This is about what we’re allowed to say, what we’re allowed to know,” says a woman on the trailer. From local farmers to tractor companies, corporate branding and global distribution, it is an industry. And as we all know, the bottom line of any industry is money.

Don’t get me wrong. I believe in companies, and I believe in competition. However, I believe the bottom line should be health. I think it is the individual customer’s right and responsibility to choose what he or she eats, and I think that person should be allowed to make the most informed choice possible. It is impossible to make an informed decision if established procedures are intentionally kept secret. “The food has become much more dangerous in ways that are being deliberately hidden from us,” said one man on the trailer. For example, if a chicken is grown within days instead of the natural three-month span, that procedure should be known by the public.

Why should the general public see the movie? It enlightens about industry-accepted methods that individuals may not accept. After all, we need to choose for ourselves and currently the industry chooses for us. Each food purchase is like a vote. If you vote unknowingly against your health and that is the fault of the industry, then the industry needs to change. Maybe it needs to be less secretive. Maybe it should have different goals.

Since no local theater is showing the movie, I suggest local groups show the DVD once it is available. Invite families. Invite organic farmers. Invite the people who own the corner vegetable stand. For interesting conversation, invite a corporate executive from the food industry. (If you do, invite me, too.)

Update: I have learned The Belcourt is screening the movie! Attend the 7:00 p.m. show on Friday, June 26, and a panel discussion will follow. Click on the link below for more information.
