Cake contests usually require baking and decorating a cake, cautiously transporting it to the competition site, adding last minute embellishments and probably making repairs. There is no lamenting weeping butter cream or cursing Dallas traffic with the online Threadcakes.com cake contest. The challenge for this unique baking contest is to create an original two-dimensional or three-dimensional cake inspired by a Threadless design.
The first Threadcakes contest took place in 2007 with over 100 entries. (View the winning entries at Threadcakes.com.) Chris Cardinal, who is running the contest in conjunction with Threadless.com, describes his inspiration for the virtual baking competition:
Two years ago, when the first iteration of the contest ran, it just kind of clicked with me. I had seen a few interesting cakes online and was running some small contests through my Threadless fan blog, www.lovesthreadless.com. It just hit me as the perfect meshing of mediums: really great, independent art as the blueprint for amazing reinterpretations into 3D cake sculptures. It's fascinating what some people delivered; first and third place last year were very clever cakes based on relatively basic drawings, and we hope to see more of the same this year.
If creating art for art’s sake is not motivation enough, the contest has an impressive roster of judges and prizes. The panel of judges includes notable cake and baking bloggers Nicole Weston of Baking Bites, Louise of Cake Journal, Jen from Cake Wrecks and Jennifer from Bake or Break. Mary Alice of Ace of Cakes and Charm City Cakes fame will also judge the culinary artwork. .
There are three separate prize packages for the two-dimensional and three-dimensional Threadcakes contest. Prizes include Threadless gear, King Arthur bakeware, supplies and Guittard chocolate. There are also gift certificates to Threadless and mystery prizes courtesy of Charm City Cakes.
Channel your inner Ace of Cakes and submit an original cake or cupcake creation based on a Threadless design. The submission period is currently underway and will continue until August 3, 2009 at 11:59 PM PST. Read the rules carefully because this contest has specific photo requirements for entries.
Happy decorating!
