Washington’s Corcoran Gallery of Art is free on Saturdays from July 4 through the end of August.

The Corcoran, one of DC’s few museums to charge admission, has two major exhibitions: “Maya Lin: Systematic Landscapes”, large installations by the designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on The Mall, and “William Eggleston: Democratic Camera, Photographs, and Video, 1961-2008”.

In addition to those exhibitions, and the permanent collection in its gorgeous Beaux Arts building, the

DC's Corcoran Gallery is free on summer Saturdays

Corcoran is offering tours, demonstrations, performances, and workshops – some workshops may have an $8-$12 materials fee.

Also, artist Randolph Williams, a Corcoran College of Art graduate, will create chalk drawings of the Corcoran’s most popular American paintings on the sidewalk in front of the building. Other artists will give demonstrations and lead hands-on activities in the Corcoran’s atrium.

Here are several selected events on various Saturdays, with descriptions by the Corcoran (click here for full schedule)

Saturday, July 18
“Tour Starts Here”
Liz Lerman Dance Exchange (Liz Lerman was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2002)
Performances at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.
It’s art. It’s dance. It’s architecture. It’s all about surprises as Liz Lerman Dance Exchange and friends transform the Corcoran. This site-specific performance offers a fresh interpretation of the guided tour and a double-take view of this Washington landmark.

Saturday, July 25
Special Hard Hat Tours
10 a.m. & 1 p.m.
This behind the scenes tour takes participants right to the top of our Beaux Arts building to see the roof restoration; other parts of the Corcoran are also explored. Free, but reservations are required because space is limited.

Saturday, August 1
“Exploring Design and Color” Workshop
10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Explore the many blues of Edward Hopper’s "Ground Swell" (reproduced in poster above) and the personal symbols of Marsden Hartley’s "Berlin Abstraction" in the American painting galleries. Participants create their own related silkscreen project in our workshop.  This program has a materials fee of $8 for members and $12 for non-members.

Saturday, August 8
Washington Photo Safari
2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Join E. David Luria in our galleries and learnhow to successfully photograph art in museums without using a flash or tripod. Luria will discuss composition, cropping, and lighting, and will focus on paintings, sculpture and architecture at the Corcoran.

Saturday August 29
“Marvelous Musical Tour”
11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Join the Virginia Virtuosi chamber music ensemble in the galleries for a tour that connects works of art with music.

The free Saturdays were made possible by a gift from the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation.
