Ten years ago, I traded my rural Appalachian upbringing for life in the bright lights and big city. Gone were the overalls and straw hat* and in their place was a leather brief case, business suits and 2” heels. A lot of people equate a “city slicker” to being a snobbish, spoiled, selfish and lazy rich person unsuited for country living. While I choose to exemplify my savvy city girl image, make no mistake, it’s a dog-eat-dog world here in the concrete jungle and I often find myself drawing on the values and morals instilled in me from life on the farm.**
My path crossed with Farmer Brown not long ago and an invitation was extended for me to come to the farm and play the starring role in a real-life episode of Green Acres. An 8-hour trip landed me right in the middle of Cornfield County where my shiny red sports car, used to the stop and go of congestion and endless traffic lights, was parked in a garage alongside a tractor the size of my house. I’ll admit that I nearly did break out with a case of hives after realizing that my beloved skyline of tall buildings and hazy smog had been replaced as far as the eye could see with cornfields dotted with an occasional farmhouse. But after a few deep breaths, I was once again transformed into that country bumpkin girl who once gathered eggs with her grandfather and fed a watermelon rind to a cow with her bare hand.
I was quite proud of myself for holding my own on the farm. I hung laundry on a clothesline in 40-degree weather (and I think I did a fairly good job of concealing my wonderment at why you wouldn’t just put the clothes in the dryer), and I didn’t act all miffed with the fact that we had to drive through miles and miles of corn to get to the nearest shopping center. I think Farmer Brown was quite amazed at how well I adapted to farm life because right after my visit, he ran into the field, evidently got lost in the corn maze and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.
Farmer Brown liked to indulge in a little nip of Captain Morgan and ginger ale after a hard day of plowing the fields and while that does sound nice and refreshing, we glamorous and sophisticated girls can’t just leave things as simple as they are on the farm ~ we have to muck things up with our big city ideals. Metropolitan living has breathed new life into Captain Morgan in the form of this cool and fruity cocktail suitable for sipping while sitting at a busy sidewalk city café. Farm life is great and all, but give me the rat race of life any old day!
*I’ve never in my life worn overalls or a straw hat, I’m just trying to draw a comparison here, folks.
**Okay, I didn’t really grow up on a farm, but my grandparents were farmers and I saw a chicken once.
