Photo Courtesy Morguefile.comFeng Shui (pronounced fung shway) is the art of placement. Feng Shui literally means wind and water. In the Chinese culture, Feng Shui is as much a part of everyday living as fast food, sports, computers, and TV are to the Western culture.

While the knowledge of feng shui was kept from the majority of the population because of its powerful ability to influence everyday lives, like all things kept secret, the truth finally managed to free itself.

You can incorporate Feng Shui elements into your bedroom without needing to be a Feng Shui Master. By using Feng Shui principles, you can enhance your lovelife and create a place of rest.

  1. Declutter. Ch’i  (or chi) energy needs to be able to move around. What is Ch’i ? The life force of all things. If your bedroom is filled with piles of clothes on the floor or in a chair, take time to hang them up and put them away in drawers and closets.

  2. Clean. Dust will make the Ch’i  stagnant. So break out the feather duster and vacuum cleaner. How long has it been since you had the draperies cleaned?

  3. Bed placement. Try to place the bed against a solid wall. You want to avoid setting your bed in front of windows, directly across from the door, and underneath exposed beams.

If you sleep with the bed against a window, ch'i energy can escape out the windows and you will feel exhausted in the morning. If there is no choice but to place the bed in front of windows, allow enough space between the bed and windows for the ch'i to flow. The depth of a chair should be sufficient.

Exposed beams that run the length of the bed can cause marital unrest and discord especially if the bed is divided by the overhead beam. Horizontal beams will cut the life-force in half.

Never place the bed directly across from a door. Having the foot of the bed facing the door is called the death placement or coffin position Ch'i should flow unobstructed throughout a room, so having a bed opposite the door blocks the flow.

  4. Bathroom doors leading from the bedroom should always be closed. Water plays a dual role in a bathroom. One is for cleaning but water also represents money. The draining of water down the pipes symbolizes waste and loss. Minimize monetary loss by closing when not in use.

  5. No water fountains or aquariums. Never place these in the bedroom or hang pictures of water. Emotion is carried by water and overpowers the occupants. Water dampens and drowns fire. And you don't want to wash away all passion. Photos and pictures that would be good elements would be of foliage, forests, flowers or other elements that would stoke fire. Again, don't overdo it. Balance is the key to good feng shui design.

  6. TV and mirrors. If you must have one, do not place it directly across from the bed. The TV screen acts as a mirror and you do not want the constant bouncing back and forth of energy as you try to sleep. it is believed that the soul leaves the body during sleep in what is called astral projection. It is widely held in Feng Shui doctrines that a mirror in the bedroom, especially if it faces the bed shocks the soul or spirit when it ventures from the body and comes face to face with its image. If your TV is in an armoire, simply close the doors.

  7. Double purposes for bedrooms. Let the bedroom be only a place of rest and nurturing. That means no corner desk for the computer or treadmill or exercise equipment. You do not want to work or have symbols of working when you are trying to sleep, rest or spend time with your lover.

  8. Colors. This is a complex subject and is influenced by directions, flying stars and pillars and how they interact with your birthday and the current year. To play it safe, choose colors you feel drawn to. This is a matter of personal taste. If you are going for dramatic then gold, red and black are bold color combinations. Try to stick with two main colors and one accent color. Don’t overdo any of them. Style and textures. This is where you can make your bedroom a true romantic retreat. Velvets, silks, brocades all make wonderful tactile pleasure and appeasing to the sense of touch and sight.

  9. Aroma. Select your favorite scents. Ones you and your lover enjoy. Buy special scented candles. Cedar or jasmine incense helps create a rich aroma. Try scented massage oil and surprise your lover with a full-body massage.

  10. Music. All you will need is a little music and soft lighting to set the stage for a romantic getaway within your home.

Once you have given your bedroom attention, you'll begin to notice the difference whenever you walk into it. Decluttered and cleaned, the space will feel inviting and relaxing. Be sure to change the linens regularly and always keep a pleasing scent with potpourri or sachets. You will be surprised at the difference all these details can make and once the ch’i  energy begins to move through your bedroom it will become the perfect setting for romance.
