Rich and Q-Tip on the 1's and 2's.
I've spent 5 years now in NYC and few parties are consistently as fun as Rich Medina's weekly Wednesday bash aptly called "Lil Ricky's Rib Shack" at APT located in the Meatpacking District on 419 West 13st. between 10th and Hudson.
It's called the Rib shack because the jams are down home and familiar. The whole scene feels like a big house party.
If you haven't ever visited APTwww.aptnyc.com/ its a spot worth checking out. Its a pretty spiffy spot. Its designed to look like a posh upscale apartment. You can only recognize it from the outside by its small ornate door and the amount of people just hanging. Once you go inside into lounge your pleasantly surprised to see a large inviting bed and a DJ booth. Yep oh boy that bed becomes real seductive and smooth. There are multiple tables and chairs abound, and a cool U shaped bar. There's always an interesting cross section of people who dip in for a drink and check out the scene. The music upstairs is definitely on the chill side.
The downstairs is reserved as the dance floor. Its surrounded by a lengthy bar and seating. So you can sit, chill and watch the action or you can take a break before resuming your two step marathon.
Enough on the spot though let's get to the true star of APT's Wednesday night party. Its run by no other than legendary D.J. Rich Medina.www.richmedina.com/ Medina is a true connoisseur of music. He effortlessly mixes the obscure and mainstream, oldies and the soon to be hot like a bartender mixes gin and tonic. Instead of hearing Mike Jackson's "Billie Jean" for the 10,000 time expect him to play, "Blame it on the Boogie." See what I mean. He's going to hit you with the unexpected and make it sound fresh!!!
Rich's devoted crowd also bring a collage of people. Expect B-boy's, corporate types, hipsters, funky, eclectic, and run of the mill people to all easily mix at his party. You never know who may be guest DJ'ing either. He now works with Q-Tip as co-DJ's at Santos Playground's on Friday nights too!!! (That's topic for another blog) Q-Tip and other local DJ's often swing by on his set at Apt and bring their own style and funk to the game.Look the guy gets asked to guest DJ in Europe and has had parties in Brazil too!!! The people here are there for one reason: To Groove and make Merry!!! There ain't a whole lot of posing here (Thank God) People really like the music, sing with the music and dance!!!! Boy can some of them really dance!! There's a dancer crowd at his parties that dedicate a good deal of their time working on dance steps. They can do the Kid and Play switch to Afro beat and even Break dance within seconds.
Anyway how much we talking about spending here? Glad you asked. The upstairs lounge is free on Wednesdays. To dance and party downstairs with Rich will only cost you $10. It'll be the best 10 you'll spend on a party though. Remember your in the Meatpacking so drinks ain't never cheap. They're not as much though as PM or AIR either though.
Do yourself a favor don't be a geek, herb or Dudley do-good. Try to get there around 12:00. That's when the cool kids come out to play.
