Gotta play your cards right when Money is tight.
We've all seen how the economy is going into the tank and quite a few of us are already feeling the hit here in New York.
I have the same question as everyone else does.
How the hell do I escape from all this depressing a____ ish ?!!?!?!
By continuing to go out and enjoying it up!
How do you do that when your Dough-re mi- is tight?
Read on and I'll get your back on track.
#1. Head to more local small bars and lounges and less big clubs.
Think of it as a small departure from your usual fare of big timing. Big clubs can be a lot of fun. They're also about doing a lot of fronting and playing shot caller. $7-$8 drinks go for $10-13 regularly and it only goes up from there. Remember you may have just gotten laid off. So find a cool little spot with $5 beers, by the pint not for a bottle of bud ya dig!!
Oh that will probably mean cutting back on going to places like Bed, Home, Marquis, Kane, all those trendy places in the on 10th and 11th ave club scene and a few in the Meatpacking. Time to cut back. Save it for a big moment. Like celebrating a new job!!!!
Here's some great alternatives. Try the Alligator and Crocodile lounges respectively between 1st and 2nd Ave on 14th st. and Bedford and Lorimer Aves in Williamsburg. They're both cheap little lounges that offer a free small pizza pie with every drink. Can't beat that. I personally think Crocodile is a little more stylish and they both have great afterwork crowds.
Other great places include Camp in Boerum Hill Brooklyn due to their amount of board games available and start hitting up places like Angels and Kings (www.angelsandkings.com) on a Wednesday for Guitar Hero night. There are many more options these are just a few that came to mind.
#2 Start inviting folks over for fun.
This one is a little tough for New Yorkers. Since most posh Manhattanites and ither cool city dwellers don't have large apartments New Yorkers are typically use to going out a lot more than almost anywhere else in the country. Again if you have a cheap lounge that's always an alternative but learn to start having some fun events at home. Invite four of 5 fun loving close friends. Start having fun Southern style and have some card games available or dominoes or something. Trivia Pursuit and Taboo for those more sophisticated....And #2 actually leads to #3
#3 Time to be a Shark
Have a little skills gambling?!? Great it'll come in handy!!! Games like Acie Ducie can help finance you going back out!!!
*****Warning This game involves gambling!!!!! Play at your own JOY or PERIL********
Quick explanation on how the game works. You have a stack of cards. A pot is set. lets say everyone places a quarter. The dealer then deals everyone one card face up. (The dealer plays too.) Then the dealer puts one card over to bet off of. The bet is that the next card you draw falls in between the number you have and the face card showing from the dealer. Let's say the number is 4 that you have and a King is showing. That means any card drawn next from a 5-Queen is a winner. If you get a King or higher or 4 or lower though you lose. Each person bets in a counterclockwise motion one at a time. You can either bet or pass to the next player. You can bet just a quarter but if you lose you owe whatever you bet. You can only bet the amount of money in the pot. If you feel you have killer odds you can bet pot and go for it all!!
****Warning #2******** If you bet it all and miss you owe that amount to the POTl!!!! So if the pot was $5 bucks then you owe $5 and the pot is now $10!!!!
The hand does not finish until every player gets a turn in that round or the pot is finished. If the hand ends with money place all cards back in the pile and redistribute in the stack of unused cards.
******Warning #3********
Play the game for quarters or single dollar only!!! The pot gets big quick with 4 or 5 people, it won't take long for the pot to get to $8 or $10. I would suggest playing games like this with level headed people that don't mind losing much money to another friend.
Yea I know damn shame but hey that's what friends are for!!! Well as long as you only try to have fun and don't let the game get out of hand everybody will come out okay. That's why I recommend minimum bets stay at quarters and never go over a $1 so it don't make people as mad as Katrina victims are at Bush.
These are just a few suggestions to get that mind thinking of other ways to have fun. I'll be giving updates to more heap bars and lounges for those very bitter days arriving in January and February. I don't want to play the Grinch sO I'll keep it chipper through the holidays.
I'm out and about!!!
