Summer reading for preschoolers available at local libraries
The Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, according to spokesperson, Cordelia Anderson, has "a great
summer reading program," including WEE Read and Be Creative.
Wee Read is for preschoolers under age 4, including toddlers and infants. Participants may sign up at all PLCMC locations, except the Main Library and Checkit Outlet. Get a reading record to note each time you read to your child. After 10 and 20 times of reading, your child can collect a prize, which may include $1.00 off a library fine.
Be Creative is a summer reading program for children ages 4 to rising 5th graders. Like the former program, participants will sign up and get a reading record. In addition to reading, participants have the choice of writing, attending a program, or listening to a recorded book. Participants can collect a prize after 10 or 20 hours of activity.
Attending a program may include events, such as a book signing or handicrafts.
The York County Library in South Carolina offers similar reading programs. The Children's Vacation Reading Programs runs from present until July 31, 2009. To participate, children ages 3-12 should register at the Bookmobile or any York County Library.
