This Sunday night, July12th at 9pm, a new hour long series, Drop Dead Diva, premieres on the Lifetime Channel. This is a wonderful show for parents and teenagers to watch together because it deals with issues of weight and body image that many teens are struggling with. (For a review of the show, see Drop Dead Diva: New Lifetime TV series)
Yesterday I attending a meet up with two of the stars of Drop Dead Diva, Brooke Elliott and Margaret Cho. Most of the discussion centered around weight and self-esteem issues. The creator of the show, Josh Berman, came up with the idea for Drop Dead Diva because he had a grandmother who was "as tall as she was wide" who lived life to the fullest.
Margaret Cho, who has had weight issues in the past, said that Drop Dead Diva is about self acceptance. It is about going from being invisible to becoming visible. She also remarked that by constantly showing size 0 celebrities all over the media, they are "killing our daughters".
This is a great opportunity for you to talk to your teens about any body issues that they might have. Take advantage of it. And spread the word about Drop Dead Diva. There are so few TV shows with plus size women and none that actually star them, it would be a shame if Drop Dead Diva didn't make it.
