On July 18th New York City will be celebrating the first ever Mandela Day, designed as a call around the world for people to honor Nelson Mandela’s inspiration and values. The culmination of the NYC Mandela Day celebration will be a concert at Radio City Music Hall featuring Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, WILL.I.AM, T-PAIN, Jesse Clegg, Gloria Gaynor, emcee WHOOPI GOLDBERG, Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, Forest Whitaker, Aretha Franklin, Wyclef Jean, Queen Latifah, Dave Stewart, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Josh Groban, Angelique Kidjo, Baaba Maal, Jesse McCartney, Zucchero and the Soweto Gospel Choir.
This celebration would be a wonderful opportunity for parents to discuss human rights with their teens and talk about trying to make the world a better place. The concert features artists both old and new and should be able to be enjoyed by both teens and their parents.
Mandela Day is made possible for 46664 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. 46664, the campaign that bears Mr. Mandela’s Robben Island prison number, was originally launched to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. Working alongside the other Mandela organizations, it is now expanding its focus to champion Mr. Mandela’s broader humanitarian work. A centrepiece of 46664’s activities will be the celebration of Mandela Day each year, and funds raised from Mandela Day will support the ongoing work of 46664 and the Nelson Mandela charitable organizations.
