At 97 Orchard Street, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, you will find The Tenement Museum. This NYC museum tells the stories of immigrants who lived in this real tenement that was built in 1863. With our economy in a recession and many of us, including our teens, are not very happy about doing without, a visit to the Tenement Museum can be a dose of reality as to just how bad living conditions have been for others over time.
The museum is open seven days a week, but must be viewed with a tour. There are special prices for students and seniors. If you visit the museum on a Wednesday, your ticket can be used for discounts at stores and restaurants throughout the Lower East Side.
By visiting the Tenement Museum's website, you can find out more about special events, exhibits and talks being held. The website is also a destination in itself. There are many educational and playful activities for kids from elementrary school through teens in high school.
