Last week, my 19 year old son and I saw The Toxic Avenger, an off-broadway musical in NYC, and we had a ball. If was hilarious, the music was great and the performances by the five cast members were amazing.
The Toxic Avenger is based on a 1985 cult film. This musical reminded me of a cross between "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Spamalot". A brief description of the musical:
"Armed with superhuman strength and a heart as big as Newark, he's out to save New Jersey, end global warming and woo the prettiest, blindest librarian in town."
It actually gets funnier as it goes on. The three other actors in the show play multiple roles. Instead of hiding it as most shows do, The Toxic Avenger actually uses this to great comedic effect.
The voices of all five cast members were fantastic, and they were given great rock songs to sing.
"The Toxic Avenger features music and lyrics by David Bryan (keyboardist and founding member of Bon Jovi), book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) and is directed by Tony Award winner John Rando (Urinetown)."
The Toxic Avenger has been nominated for Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League awards. I give it an award for great show for parents to see with their older teens and twenty something kids. It is not for tweens or children. Check it out at the Toxic Avenger website.
