Federer won the 2009 French Open versus Swedish opponent, Robin Soderling, 6-1, 7-6 (1), 6-4.

Congratulations Roger Federer!

The French Open title had eluded him in his otherwise illustrious career, until Sunday June 7, 2009 at Roland Garros stadium in Paris. "I think that now, and until the end of my career, I can really play with my mind at peace and no longer hear that I've never won at Roland Garros," stated the Swiss victor.

Federer was competing in his 19th Grand Slam title and 24-year-old Soderling was competing in his first. Soderling came into the tournament seeded No.23.

Retired tennis superstar Pete Sampras watched the match from Los Angeles on Sunday. Federer and Sampras are now tied with a record of 14 Grand Slams each. On the topic, Sampras declared "I think this just further solidifies his (Federer's) place in history as the greatest player that played the game."

From France Federer goes on to compete in Wimbeldon beginning June 22 and running through July 5.  Beyond that ..."It hasn't once entered my mind yet that I want to retire. My life is in great shape right now," stated the elegant Federer.
