For some married couples, cheating is a sin. For others, cheating resembles the breaking point in which the marriage has officially dissolved.
And then there are those spouses that view cheating as an extracurricular activity. What you don’t know can’t hurt you, right?
But what’s a spouse to do when faced with the ooopss-I-couldn’t-keep-my-legs-closed syndrome? How is a spouse supposed to react upon learning that they’re being cheated on?
Easy… they follow in Hollywood’s footsteps, many of who have vehemently chosen to stay with their spouse, regardless of his/her alleged cheating ways.
Fergie and Josh Duhamel are the latest dynamic duo to take on cheating allegations. But Fergie isn’t having any of it. In fact, she – and Josh – continue to deny the stories.
Despite the many caught-in-the-act articles outlining the Bachelorette's Ed Swiderski’s cheating ways, Jillian Harris continues to remain in the relationship – and yes, even accepted his marriage proposal shortly after several raunchy pictures circulated the news circuit.
Elizabeth Edwards manages to overlook the fact that her husband, John, former N.C. senator, has admitted to having an affair with a campaign worker, and may have even fathered her child. Elizabeth continues to believe in her marriage and remains married for the family, even though the affair occurred while she was undergoing chemo treatment.
Even The Hills Audrina Patridge can’t seem to get Justin Bobby out of her mind, even after he’s admitted to her face that he has a thing for rival, Kristin Cavallari.
So why do these women stay, even though divorce is more socially acceptable than ever before?
I mean, even Mad Men’s Betty Draper moved to Reno to get a divorce.
For starters, divorce is damaging to one’s health. According to one Newsweek article, authors Barbara Kantrowitz and Pat Wingert reveal that, “people who suffer marital disruption through either divorce or widowhood are 20% more likely to have chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or cancer than married people.”
In another Chicago Marriage Examiner article, a University of Chicago study uncovered the key to a healthy heart is to stay away from heartbreak.
Secondly, outside of sports, cars and their own penis, men are able to turn on the charm and woo their wives back.
For example, L.A. Lakers’ all-star player, Kobe Bryant, made it up to his wife, Vanessa, by surprising her with a reportedly $50,000 recommitment ceremony. This was after he devoured her in diamonds shortly after he was accused of sleeping around.
Thirdly, some spouses rely on religion to guide them through the process. For instance, a dear friend of mine told me that should his wife ever cheat on him, he would consider staying in the marriage. Why? At one point in their relationship, he and his wife were meant to be together.
On the other hand, not all men and women feel the need to remain married.
Thanks to Jennifer Aniston, Eddie Cibrian’s ex-wife, Dean McDermott’s ex-wife (who also penned a book about how Tori Spelling stole her man) and Jude Law’s many women, crying them a river is what heals the heart.
So… would you stay or would you go?
