Good news this week for family pets. An Associated Press (AP)-Petside.com poll released Tuesday indicates that 50 percent of American pet owners consider their pets to be as much a part of the family as any person in the household. The AP-Petside.com poll was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media from May 28-June 1, 2009.

Just how does this family status vary between cats and dogs? According to some of the other survey findings, dogs apparently have the upper paw when it comes to family vacations. Fifty percent of dog owners take their canine companions along on family vacations vs. 39 percent of cat owners who take along their feline companions. Dogs also are more likely to be taken to work than felines at 21 percent versus 14 percent.

However, cats edge out dogs at bedtime. Thirty-six percent of cat owners allow their kitties to sleep in the same bed with them whereas only 29 percent of dog owners allow their dogs in the bed. Could it be that cats just don’t take no for an answer?

If you are not one of those Americans with a cat as part of your household  – or you are thinking one is not enough, both The SF/SPCA and Peninsula Humane Society are more than happy to accommodate you with some wonderful feline companionship.

Jennyanydots is a real lap cat

This week, The SF/SPCA is featuring:

Jennyanydots (A05756035). This sweet, 3.8-year old kitty will climb straight into your lap to get some affection. She loves cheek and head rubs and will purr happily while you pet her, but her lower back and tummy can be a bit sensitive. She will let you know with a tail swish when she’s had enough petting; just respect her wishes and she’ll be your best friend! Jennyanydots is quite playful and is a fun kitty who will do fine in a loving home where she can get consistent and respectful handling. She would be happier in a home without children.

For June Adopt a Cat Shelter month, The SF SPCA has special fees for its many adorable cats and kittens waiting for their forever homes:

· Adults cats 6-years and older are being sponsored by The SF/SPCA Adoption Department
· Adult cats 1-5 years are reduced to $35
· Youngster 6 months to 1 year, $80
· Kittens, 2-6 months, $100

Maddie’s Adoption Center at The SF/SPCA, 250 Florida Street, is open daily, 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. except Wednesday, 1:00 – 6:00 p.m., and major holidays. View more wonderful, adoptable cats at www.sfspca.org

Very outgoing Rosco needs to be indoors

At the Peninsula Humane Society in San Mateo, meet:

Rosco, a 3-year-old male cat with pure white fur. His coloring means he is more susceptible to skin cancer and will need to be an indoor only cat. There are lots of great things about Rosco, he’s friendly, curious, confident, attentive, and outgoing! He can live with other cats, possibly small animals and dogs. He can be adopted by a family with children. So if you are looking for an energetic and fun fellow ask for Rosco.

Zaria is as beautiful as her name

Zaria, an exotic 3-year-old altered female with Siamese Chocolate Point coloring. She is a sweet and gentle gal that enjoys petting. She can be a bit shy so will need an understanding home that will allow her to warm up to new surroundings on her own terms.

PHS/SPCA is open for adoptions Monday through Friday, 11am to 7pm, and weekends from 11am to 6pm. It is located at 12 Airport Blvd., San Mateo next to Coyote Point Park. Visit www.PHS-SPCA.org or call 650-340-7022
