Hocus, pocus! Are you in focus….on your driving? Or, is your mind on that witch’s brew at home? Maybe you are thinking about those little monsters you left behind? School bus drivers, as well as other drivers, need to remain focused on driving.
Focusing on driving means that your mind is free to be alert to traffic conditions, pedestrians and possible weather situation. It means letting other problems go while you are driving. For school bus drivers, there is also the additional obligation to be aware of the students on your bus.
If you have ever driven somewhere and wondered how you got there, this is an example of unfocused driving. Driving the same route everyday can become monotonous and it becomes easy to let your mind veer off onto other business but it is wise to remain alert to your present situation.
To keep yourself alert, make sure that you look around you. Check your mirrors so that you are aware of what is happening behind you. Shift your eyes from left to right to be aware of more than what is directly in front of you. Look beyond the driver or pedestrian in front of you. Driver focus is not about just about what is directly in front of you.
Focus, focus not hocus pocus. Focus on your driving. Think about what are doing right now.
